The average adult should get 7 to 9 hrs sleep each night according to the National Sleep Foundation. But I’ve been a night person all my life, so I regularly operate on less that 6 hrs sleep. Now as I’ve gotten older I’m not able to function with reduced sleep the way I used to. To the point where I feel mentally slower during days when I don’t sleep enough the night before.
So its time to do something about it.
Goal: Get at least 7 hrs every night for 1 week
Start: Sunday October 30th
Strategy
- In Bed By 10:30pm
- Screens off by 11:00
- Sleep by 11:30 latest
- Awake at 6:30am
- Curtains open to let in morning light
- Keep Sleep Journal
Obstacles: I go bowling on Thursday nights so that may be a problem. I may not reach home in time to go to be early which could mess up my schedule. Other than that the toughest part will be going to bed early on Friday and Saturday.

UPDATE – Day 1 – Monday October 31st
Went to bed at 10:30pm as planned, unfortunately I read a book on my Kindle Fire until 11:30pm rather than 11:00. I estimate I fell asleep at 11:45pm and turned my alarm off at 6:35am
Total Sleep: 6 hours & 50 minutes
Close enough!

Same as lastnight, got to sleep around 11:45 and woke up at 6:15

Update – Day 3 – Wednesday November 2nd
Really rough night. Got to sleep around 12 midnight and woke up 4:25am! that sucked. Dealing with some life issues there and obviously affected my sleep. Went back to bed around 5:30 am and slept until 7:20am.
Total Sleep: 6 hours 15 minutes

Last night was Bowling. We had a lane that sucked. Kept breaking down so it took us a long time to finish. didn’t get home until after 12m. Went to bed at 1:30 and woke up at 6:30 as usual.

Got into bed at 10:30pm on a Friday night but couldn’t fall to sleep. ended up watching Youtube vids til after 12. Woke up at 7:30am
